kafue river

22 January 2007

An image of Kafue river which is the biggest river passing through Copperbelt. It is the most polluted river due to mining activities. In November the river was heavily polluted in Chingola when a pipe from KCM carrying tailings (mixture of acid and copper remains) burst spilling the material into the Kafue river. See posting below.

mining waste

22 January 2007

Mining waste along the road from Ndola to Kitwe. Waste from Anglo-American copper mines. Currently it is under Mopani copper mines. Environmental pollution from foreign owned multinational has a huge impact on Zambia. There is no policy in place to ensure the waste is cleared. Acids wash out from this into the environment. A stream is very close by and acids enter the stream and onto the compounds (shanty towns).

Last post before first visit

15 January 2007

Well only a few days until Mr B sets off for Zambia. Many students have been keen to hear about it so I will try to post images and give an account of the places that I visit at the end of each day. If you have any specific questions please email me at school or leave a comment on this post. Bon voyage…
