Industry in Zambia

30 December 2006

Copper mining is the most important industry in Zambia. One company alone (Konkola Copper Mines) contributes one sixth of the Zambian Gross Domestic Product (GDP). When Mr B goes to Zambia he will be visiting the largest open-cast mine in the world and exploring the benefits and problems that this industry has brought to the people of Zambia. Read Mr Phiri’s account of a recent accident which has resulted in major pollution of Chingola and the surrounding area as an example of one such problem.

First visit

29 December 2006

I will be travelling to Zambia on 20th January. I will fly from Heathrow via Johannesburg in South Africa to Ndola in Zambia. This is a very exciting prospect and I would like to record some messages from staff and students in Pencoed to play to my hosts in Kabundi High School. In preparing for my visit I am already learning a great deal about Zambia. For example, did you know the currency of Zambia is called the Kwacha?

Great news!!

21 December 2006

We have just heard that our application has been accepted. This means that our first visits can take place in January and April 2007. Over the next month Mr Biebrach will be recording some messages from pupils and teachers to take over to Chingola.

Mr Phiri has posted a very interesting article that explores river pollution in Chingola. This is one aspect of our joint project. We will also be examining pollution  of the river Ewenny in Bridgend to compare.

The second part of our joint project examines strategies to educate people about HIV/Aids. We will be comparing and contrasting the impact of this disease in Wales and Zambia and examining treatment and strategies to reduce its spread.

Please may I take this opportunity to wish all staff and students in Kabundi High School and Pencoed School a very happy Christmas or as we say in Welsh…Nadolig Llawen!
